Current and former patients of Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC) took part in a fire walk last month to raise money for the Northwood-based centre.

On Friday, March 21, the brave individuals walked over red-hot coals at the event, which was organised by East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity.

Chandrika, Hitesh and Sanjay Ruparelia took on the walk in memory of Sanjay’s father and Chandrika’s husband, Anil, to mark what would have been his 75th birthday. Anil’s brother, Hitesh, lit the fire to start the event.

Sanjay said: “MVCC played a crucial role in my mother’s recovery from breast cancer, offering expert care and support during a challenging time.

“By taking on the fire walk, my family are honouring loved ones we have lost, celebrating those who have survived and thanking the centre for its vital work. MVCC remains a beacon of hope, and with continued support, it can keep making a difference to countless lives.”

Eloise Huddleston, director of East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, said: “Thank you so much to the Ruparelia family and everyone who bravely took part in the fire walk.

“With funds raised from events like the fire walk, we fund complementary therapies to help patients deal with the side effects of their treatment. We also fund special chairs for patients having chemotherapy which can often take several hours, and we also fund improvements like sky panels which help patients feel more calm and relaxed during radiotherapy.

“We couldn’t do any of this without kind people like the Ruparelia family raising funds and donating.”

The event raised £13,000 for MVCC.
