A Berkhamsted pub has been crowned Mid-Chilterns Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Cider Pub of the Year.
The Rising Sun, known to many as The Riser, picked up first prize for its atmosphere, location, and impressive range of ciders.
The pub has been a cornerstone of the community since the 1850s and is the last surviving ale house on the Grand Union Canal.
The award comes as welcome news after The Rising Sun has faced a number of challenges in recent times, as a result of a noise complaint lodged three years ago. As reported in the January edition of BerkhamstedNews, the community raised more than £20,000 to “protect the pub’s future from ongoing threats and help pay legal debts”.
A spokesperson for Mid-Chilterns CAMRA said: “The Mid-Chilterns CAMRA committee would like to commend the team at The Rising Sun in Berkhamsted for their continued championing of real cider and perry.
“This Mid-Chilterns favourite is a pub that should be on any local drinker’s radar, with a spectacular range of 15 different ciders and perries regularly cycled (plus a noted beer list too!).
“Though a local institute, The Rising Sun has faced its fair share of challenges this year, spurring the start of a crowdfunding campaign that has seen over £20,000 contributed by drinkers from Hertfordshire and beyond – a testament to The Riser’s appeal as a brilliant boozer.
“Well done once again to Nigel, Mark and their wonderful team!”
